Mom’s Night Out: Scholastic Canada Book Club “Inhuman”

December 17, 2013momstownOtherNo comments

Our Mom’s Book Club read sponsored by Scholastic Canada was “Inhuman” by Kat Falls. If you loved “The Hunger Games” this is kinda similar in a futuristic way but with a different twist. Definitely a unique dystopic vision—and a bit terrifying!

Some great reviews on goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/
And one from one another popular blogger: http://www.themisbehavinlibrarian.com

We all really liked the book and thought it was a “nice, quick read”. We’d definitely recommend it to others. The ending left us hanging and wanting more. We all would read the next book when it comes out and we’re excited that it is going to be a trilogy.

We had a great discussion about the book. We spent quite a bit of time on the science aspect and the question of “not can we do it, but should we do it?”

I found an interview with the author http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/authors/interviews/article/59360-q-a-with-kat-falls.html where she talked about the meaning of the book. She mentions a true story of a scary man approaching her daughter, a neighbour steps in and the man takes off.  When asked, the daughter said that she didn’t want to be rude to the man that was asking for help to look for his cat.

This story, of course, got us thinking (and our inner mama bear emerging).  Lane was a rule following, trusting person who wasn’t used to standing up for herself or facing evil.  In the Feral zone she had to learn how to be fierce, trust her gut, and break some rules.  It would be interesting to re-read the book with this in mind and see if we see things in a different light.

We are all looking forward to the next Mama Book Club Night and the discussions it will bring!
